District 2 Baseball Semfinals Predictions

The District 2 baseball quarterfinals took place on Tuesday, and the semifinal matchups are set across all six classes. 24 teams continue their journey towards a district championship and the state tournament. Here’s a look at how each classification’s semifinals could go.

Quarterfinal Predictions Record: 13-2

A: Forest City vs Susquehanna

Both teams have struggled this season, but the winner will go on to face MMI Prep in the district championship. They split the regular season series, and the Foresters won 17-0 over the Sabers just over a week ago. Forest City is playing better, winning two of five whereas Susquehanna has lost six straight. I’ll take the Foresters and their current momentum.

Prediction: Forest City defeats Susquehanna

AA: Wyoming Seminary vs Holy Redeemer, Lackawanna Trail vs Elk Lake

A pair of division matchups in the semifinals after all the top four seeds advanced. Holy Redeemer and Wyoming Seminary split the regular season series, and Lackawanna Trail swept Elk Lake across their two meetings.

The Royals and Blue Knights met in the semifinals last year, when the Royals won 6-2. Both teams will have their top pitchers available after convincing wins in the quarterfinals. Joe Korus will likely start for Holy Redeemer after pitching 5.2 scoreless innings against the Blue Knights with 11 strikeouts in their first meeting this season. Despite that, the Royals have struggled lately and lost seven of nine entering the playoffs. I’ll take the Blue Knights, who’ve won seven of eight after their win vs Old Forge.

Elk Lake will have a full pitching staff available against the Lions, who will likely hand the ball to Michael Palmer. The Warriors are also at home and coming off a five-inning victory over Blue Ridge. Lackawanna Trail eked out a 2-1 win vs a solid Mountain View team, but I trust the Warriors pitching staff to get the job done.

Predictions: Wyoming Seminary defeats Holy Redeemer, Elk Lake defeats Lackawanna Trail

AAA: Lakeland vs Riverside, Dunmore vs Lake-Lehman

Another bracket where all the top seeds advanced. Riverside and Lakeland met twice in the regular season, with the Vikings winning by 12 and eight runs respectively. The Vikings have the pitching depth and offense to make noise in June, and it starts against the Chiefs.

Dunmore and Lake-Lehman will likely turn into a pitchers duel. Both teams saved their aces and will play that hand in this matchup. Lake-Lehman has looked stronger in a tough WVC Division 2, so I give the Black Knights the edge over the reigning district champions.

Predictions: Riverside defeats Lakeland, Lake-Lehman defeats Dunmore

AAAA: Hanover Area vs Wyoming Area, Crestwood vs Mid Valley

The most chaotic quarterfinal upset goes to Crestwood after its 13-3 win over No. 3 seed Scranton Prep. Avery Brace homered twice in the win and will likely start against Mid Valley in a rematch of last season’s district championship. The Spartans will likely throw out Cooper Lukasavage, who leads the team with a 2.46 ERA. As long as Mid Valley takes Crestwood seriously, expect them to return to the district championship game.

Hanover Area and Wyoming Area met twice this year, where the Warriors won both games. The Hawkeyes had a tight win over Honesdale in the quarterfinals and may not have enough pitching to slow down a red-hot Warrior lineup.

Predictions: Wyoming Area defeats Hanover Area, Mid Valley defeats Crestwood

AAAAA: Abington Heights vs Pittston Area, Dallas vs Wallenpaupack

The matchup everyone expected to be the championship in the preseason will happen one round earlier. The Patriots and Comets met in the championship last year in a pitchers duel. Elijah Barr is good to pitch for Pittston after missing time with injury earlier this season. Nick Bradley pitched for the Comets in their 7-0 win vs North Pocono and is ineligible to pitch in this one because of the required three days rest between appearances when throwing over 75 pitches in the postseason. Coupled with a Pittston team that won another WVC Division 1 Championship and has Barr at full strength, expect the Patriots to return to the championship game.

Wallenpaupack has flown under the radar for most of this season. The Buckhorns went 15-5 with one of the best pitching staffs in the district, but largely remained underrated until they beat Wyoming Area 2-1 on the road on May 12. They face a Dallas team that went 14-6 in the regular season and beat West Scranton 5-2 in the quarterfinals. The key will be whose offense can break through, and Dallas has shown this year they can win the big one, particularly in its win vs Hazleton.

Predictions: Pittston Area defeats Abington Heights, Dallas defeats Wallenpaupack

AAAAAA: Wilkes-Barre Area vs Williamsport, Wyoming Valley West vs Hazleton Area

The AAAAAA playoffs had the most exciting quarterfinals of any bracket. Wilkes-Barre took down Scranton in 11 innings and Wyoming Valley West survived for a one-run win over Delaware Valley.

The Wolfpack will be tasked with slowing down a Williamsport offense that scored 20 runs in two games vs District 2 teams this season. The Wolfpack will also need to figure out their rotation after 11 innings on Tuesday. The Millionaires will likely be too much to handle, especially with the five game losing streak the Wolfpack were on when the playoffs started.

The last time Wyoming Valley West lost a baseball game was April 26 at PNC Field vs Hazleton by a score of 6-1. Since then, the Spartans won seven straight including their quarterfinal victory over the Warriors. Hazleton has struggled to score runs lately and will need to do so in order to keep up with Wyoming Valley West’s high octane offense. The Cougars will throw out Freddy Corrado, who shut down the Spartans twice this season. This game feels like a coin flip, but give me the Cougars and their ace.

Predictions: Williamsport defeats Wilkes-Barre Area, Hazleton defeats Wyoming Valley West
