The District 2 baseball regular season has come and gone. The division champions have been ground and now the journey towards Penn State and the state championships begin, starting with the quarterfinals. Here is how the quarterfinals could shake out in every classification in District 2.
The A bracket only has three teams, so the bracket will start in the semifinals.
AA: Holy Cross vs Holy Redeemer, Blue Ridge vs Elk Lake, Mountain View vs Lackawanna Trail, Old Forge vs Wyoming Seminary
This is the bracket with the most intriguing quarterfinals, with five of the eight teams finishing .500 or better. Top seed Holy Redeemer run ruled winless Holy Cross earlier this season, and a similar result could happen in the quarterfinals. Elk Lake swept Blue Ridge in the regular season by a combined 18 runs. Lackawanna Trail and Mountain View split the regular season series, with the Lions getting their revenge at home last week. Wyoming Seminary and Old Forge both enter the playoffs hot, having won six of seven and four of six respectively. The Blue Knights will be eager for a third round with the Royals and should get it with a win at home.
Predictions: Holy Redeemer beats Holy Cross, Elk Lake beats Blue Ridge, Lackawanna Trail beats Mountain View, Wyoming Seminary beats Old Forge
AAA: Carbondale vs Lake-Lehman, Western Wayne vs Dunmore, Montrose vs Lakeland
Riverside gets a bye into the semifinals and awaits the winner of Montrose and Lakeland. The Chiefs beat the Meteors on Friday to end their regular season, but will need to do it again for a third crack at the Vikings. Dunmore is back in the quarterfinals after getting a bye last year, but faces a Western Wayne team that lost four straight to end the year 6-14. Lake-Lehman will try to run rule a two-win Carbondale team to save its pitching for a potential semifinal clash with the Bucks.
Predictions: Lake-Lehman defeats Carbondale, Dunmore defeats Western Wayne, Lakeland defeats Montrose
AAAA: Valley View vs Wyoming Area, Berwick vs Mid Valley, Crestwood vs Scranton Prep, Honesdale vs Hanover Area
The top four seeds were the only teams in the bracket to finish with a record of .500 or better. Wyoming Area went 17-3 with wins over fellow contenders Mid Valley and Hanover Area, as well as a win over Pittston Area. Mid Valley struggled against some of the top teams in the district, but played them close and beat Riverside earlier this year. The Spartans face a Berwick team that beat Wyoming Area back in March. Scranton Prep enters the playoffs as possibly the hottest team in the district, overcoming an 0-5 start by winning 11 of 14. Hanover Area started hot but struggled to end the season, including losing to rival Nanticoke who missed the postseason. Honesdale is the biggest wildcard in the field. The Hornets were 2-4-1 before winning five straight then dropping five straight games. They ended the year with back-to-back wins before a one-run loss to Mid Valley.
Predictions: Wyoming Area defeats Valley View, Mid Valley defeats Berwick, Scranton Prep defeats Crestwood, Honesdale defeats Hanover Area
AAAAA: West Scranton vs Dallas, North Pocono vs Abington Heights
Both of these matchups took place in the regular season. Dallas beat West Scranton 10-0 in the season opener at West Scranton. The Comets and Trojans split their season series, with North Pocono picking up a 9-7 road win in Clarks Summit last Tuesday. The winner of that one gets Pittston Area in the semifinals, the team that beat them in the district championship last year. Dallas would get a date with Wallenpaupack if it beats the Invaders for a second time.
Predictions: Dallas defeats Wallenpaupack, Abington Heights beats North Pocono
AAAAAA: Delaware Valley vs Wyoming Valley West, Scranton vs Wilkes-Barre Area
Wyoming Valley West enters the playoffs on a six game winning streak, which featured victories over Wilkes-Barre Area and Dallas. The Warriors have struggled all year and were on a six game losing streak before winning the regular season finale against Valley View. Wilkes-Barre Area ended the season losing five straight and seven of nine, with their only wins in that stretch coming against Crestwood and Nanticoke. Scranton struggled all season, finishing 8-11 but did beat Abington Heights back in March. The Wolfpack will be at home and did face a tougher slate than the Knights over the course of the season.
Predictions: Wyoming Valley West defeats Delaware Valley, Wilkes-Barre Area defeats Scranton
