DUNMORE — Dunmore High School opened the PIAA Class 3A girls basketball state playoffs with a gritty 36–33 victory over Mount Carmel Area High School Friday night.

The Lady Bucks were powered by Amanda Dempsey, who knocked down three three-pointers in the second quarter and finished with 14 points to lead Dunmore in the opening-round win.

Dunmore overcame an early deficit thanks to a strong second quarter. Dempsey scored nine points in the period, all from beyond the arc, helping the Lady Bucks turn momentum and build a 23–15 halftime lead.

Jackie Brown added seven points, while Janaya Martin contributed six points, including four in the fourth quarter to help secure the win. Leena Conte also chipped in with four points during Dunmore’s decisive second-quarter surge.

Mount Carmel battled back in the second half and made things interesting down the stretch. The Red Tornadoes trimmed the deficit in the third quarter, with Tessa Fourspring scoring four points and Arianna Adams connecting on a three-pointer to cut the margin to 28–26.

But Dunmore’s defense held firm in the final period, limiting Mount Carmel to just seven fourth-quarter points while Martin delivered key baskets to close the door.

With the victory, Dunmore (23–3), the District 2 champion, advances to the second round of the PIAA Class 3A state tournament, where the Lady Bucks will face Executive Education, the District 11 champion.
