Defense Rules the Night as Allentown Central Catholic Edges Abington Heights, 10-3

Offense was hard to come by Friday night in Clarks Summit.
Allentown Central Catholic and Abington Heights opened their seasons with a physical, defense-heavy matchup filled with penalties, cramping and missed opportunities before the Vikings emerged with a 10-3 victory.
The difference came during the second quarter.
Allentown Central Catholic put together the game’s most productive possession, marching 94 yards on a 16-play drive before Trey Torres-Johnson finished it with a two-yard touchdown run. Bryson Baker later connected on a 32-yard field goal, sending the Vikings into halftime with a 10-0 advantage.
Abington Heights faced some adversity before the break when starting quarterback Noah Kayal suffered a leg injury following a sack. Kayal did not return, and Gavin Shay took over the offense in the second half.
While ACC found enough offense to build the lead, Abington Heights running back Jayden Anglin produced the biggest individual offensive performance of the night.
Anglin rushed for 190 yards on 22 carries and immediately helped the Comets respond after halftime. He accounted for 72 rushing yards on Abington Heights’ opening possession of the third quarter, which ended with Jack Hartshorn connecting on a 19-yard field goal to cut the Vikings’ lead to 10-3.
From there, both defenses took over.
Abington Heights continually disrupted ACC’s attempts to extend the lead, with Cooper Manning among the Comets making plays in the backfield. On the other side, the Vikings repeatedly came up with stops when Abington Heights crossed into scoring territory.
That set up the biggest sequence of the fourth quarter.
Anglin broke free for 38 yards to move Abington Heights to the ACC 14-yard line with an opportunity to tie the game. The Vikings responded with three consecutive defensive stops, and a mishandled hold on a field-goal attempt ended the possession without points.
Allentown Central Catholic then turned to Torres-Johnson, who finished with 86 rushing yards and the game’s only touchdown, to help drain the remaining clock.
Neither team found much breathing room throughout the night, but ACC’s second-quarter scoring burst and ability to finish defensive stands proved to be the difference.
The Vikings open the season 1-0 and return home to face Bethlehem Catholic next Saturday, while Abington Heights begins 0-1 and travels to Trinity on Thursday night.
