Valley View Opens Section 5 Title Defense in Dominant Fashion

JESSUP, Pa. — One year after capturing the Section 5 championship, Valley View’s Carbino Club Major Softball All-Stars are off to another impressive start.

Backed by a complete-game no-hitter from Alana Lopuhovsky and a balanced offensive attack, Valley View defeated District 31 champion Pittston, 12-0, Tuesday evening in the opening round of the Section 5 Major Softball Tournament at Jessup Youth Sports Complex.

Valley View struck first in the opening inning when a wild pitch allowed the game’s first run to cross the plate before adding three more in the second to seize control.

Rebecca Peoples delivered a two-run single during the inning, while an aggressive steal of home extended the lead to 4-0.

The defending sectional champions continued to apply pressure before breaking the game open with a six-run fifth inning.

Lily Witkowski ripped a two-run double, another wild pitch plated a run, and Lizzie Deriancho capped the outburst with a three-run triple to put the mercy rule into effect.

Lopuhovsky was nearly untouchable inside the circle.

The right-hander tossed a five-inning no-hitter, allowing just one baserunner on a walk while striking out four to lead Valley View into the next round.

Offensively, Valley View collected eight hits, with contributions coming throughout the lineup.

Deriancho drove in a game-high three RBIs, while Witkowski added two RBIs. Rebecca Peoples, Natalie Paciotti, Sophia Thomas, Maggie Ritzco, Charlee Cole, Alana Lopuhovsky, and Lily Witkowski each recorded a hit in the victory.

Valley View also remained patient at the plate, drawing six walks, with Deriancho reaching twice via free passes. Peoples added two stolen bases as the defending champions continued to pressure Pittston defensively.

District 31 champion Pittston battled throughout the contest but was unable to solve Lopuhovsky, who completed the no-hit shutout. Andrea Colon started in the circle before Hannah Beekman worked in relief.

With the convincing victory, Valley View advances in the Section 5 tournament looking every bit like the reigning champions they are.
