The Crestwood Comets delivered a powerful performance on Monday, taking down Berwick with an impressive 11-1 victory. Spearheading the charge was Jake McLaughlin, whose exceptional day at the plate and on the mound proved pivotal in the team's decisive win.
McLaughlin was a force to be reckoned with, collecting three hits in as many at bats. His offensive prowess included a crucial double in the third inning, alongside singles in the first and fourth innings, consistently putting pressure on the Berwick defense.
Berwick managed to get on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the initial inning when Nick Helbing hit a single that brought in a run. However, the Comets swiftly responded, seizing control in the second inning. An error allowed two runs to cross the plate, granting Crestwood Comets a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.
The third inning saw Crestwood Comets break the game wide open, exploding for five runs on just two hits. The inning unfolded with an error scoring one run, followed by Jake McLaughlin's double that drove in another. Another error led to a run, Aiden Campbell was hit by a pitch to bring in a run, and Ryder Zurawski grounded out, adding another tally to the scoreboard.
Jake McLaughlin not only dominated at the plate but also earned the win as the starting pitcher. He showed great control, surrendering only three hits and one run over three and two-thirds innings, striking out four batters and issuing two walks. Berwick's starting pitcher, Pryce Gearinger, took the loss, allowing 10 runs (though only two were earned) on six hits over three innings, with two strikeouts and two walks. Jakob Lamoreaux came in relief for the Comets, delivering a solid one and one-third innings of no-run ball, striking out one and walking one while not giving up any hits.
Beyond McLaughlin's heroics, Matt Rodgers and Tyler Barker each contributed multiple hits, showcasing the depth of the Comets' lineup. Crestwood Comets were also aggressive on the base paths, tallying four stolen bases throughout the game. For Berwick, Nick Helbing's single was a highlight, as he led his team with one run batted in. Helbing, Cam Warner, and JP Negron each recorded one hit for Berwick.
