Cougars Face Tough Tests During Homecoming Weekend

Misericordia University’s Homecoming Weekend brought plenty of energy to Mangelsdorf Field on Saturday, but both Cougar soccer teams came away on the wrong side of the scoreboard.

The women’s team battled nationally ranked Messiah throughout the afternoon before falling 1-0, while the men’s squad faced a strong Lycoming attack and suffered a 4-0 setback in front of the Homecoming crowd.

Women’s Soccer Falls in Tight Defensive Battle

The Misericordia women kept No. 9 Messiah within reach for nearly the entire afternoon, but a second-half goal proved to be the difference.

The opening 45 minutes featured a physical, defensive contest in which opportunities were difficult to come by. Misericordia created several chances, including attempts from Kaleigh Horos, Ella Cipriani and Larissa Evans, but the Cougars were unable to find the back of the net.

Goalkeeper Patrissi also kept the Falcons off the scoreboard in the first half, turning away a Messiah attempt late in the opening period. Evans nearly sent Misericordia into halftime with the lead when she moved into the middle and fired toward goal, only to see the shot stopped by the Messiah keeper.

The Cougars continued to press after halftime. Julia Hayward had an early opportunity, but her attempt in the 49th minute was blocked.

Messiah finally broke through at 54:25 when Alayna Williams scored off an assist from Lauren Kenny, giving the Falcons the only goal they would need.

Misericordia continued searching for an equalizer. Patrissi made an important diving stop during a one-on-one opportunity in the 62nd minute to keep the deficit at one.

With less than three minutes remaining, Hayward had perhaps the Cougars’ final chance to level the match, but the Messiah goalkeeper smothered the attempt.

Messiah finished with a 16-7 advantage in shots, while Misericordia put two attempts on target compared with three for the Falcons. Both goalkeepers recorded two saves.

Lycoming Pulls Away From Men’s Team

The Misericordia men also found themselves in a competitive match statistically, but Lycoming made its opportunities count and left Mangelsdorf Field with a 4-0 victory.

The Warriors struck early, taking the lead in the ninth minute when Connor Hussman finished a chance assisted by Leandro Cruz. Hussman added his second goal in the 21st minute, with Andrew Barclay providing the assist, sending Lycoming into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.

Misericordia attempted to answer but could not convert its opportunities. The Cougars actually finished with 12 shots to Lycoming’s 13, but the Warriors held an 8-3 edge in shots on goal.

Lycoming added to its lead just over five minutes into the second half when Cruz found the net, making it a three-goal game.

The Cougars continued to battle late into the contest. Noah Romig and Anthony Numssen each recorded two shots to pace the Misericordia attack.

Aiden Trapp came closest to putting Misericordia on the scoreboard when he tested the Lycoming goalkeeper in the 88th minute, but the attempt was denied.

Lycoming added its final goal moments later, with Dylan Motta scoring off a corner kick in the 89th minute.

Despite the final margin, the Cougars finished with nearly the same number of total shots as the Warriors and limited their opponents to five corner kicks while earning three of their own.

For both Misericordia teams, Homecoming Weekend provided an opportunity to compete on their home field in front of a supportive crowd. Neither team was able to secure a victory, but both squads showed stretches of competitive play against challenging opponents.
