From the bottom of the first inning, the Hazleton Area Lady Cougars were electric with their bats. Despite Dallas scoring first, the Lady Cougars gained momentum and carried it with them until the bottom of the sixth inning when the game ended with Hazleton winning 12-2 in a ten-run rule victory.
The Lady Cougars tacked on 6 runs in the third inning by capitalizing on crucial errors by the Mountaineers and stringing together clutch hits. This major rally took the game from being tied 1-1, to 7-1 in favor of the Lady Cougars.
The Mountaineers scored another run in the top of the sixth inning to cut the lead down to five, but the Cougars once again came alive with their offense and added on five more runs to cap off their incredible offensive performance.
Lacey Youngblood took the loss for the Mountaineers. The pitcher gave up 17 hits and 10 earned runs in the loss, while striking out 5 and walking one.
Isabella Almeida earned the win for Hazleton. The starter went the full six innings, giving up only six hits, and one earned run. She didn’t walk anyone and recorded one strikeout.
Saige Klesh, Sofia Rodgers, and Hannah Matyas led Hazleton with three hits each. Matyas also led the Lady Cougars in RBIs, recording three.
Annie Osipower led the Mountaineers with two hits in three at bats.
The Mountaineers are hoping to bounce back from this loss in their next game against the reigning state champions, Valley View. The Lady Cougars are hoping to continue their winning streak in their next game against the immensely competitive Tunkhannock Tigers.
