A pitchers' duel kept fans on the edge of their seats Wednesday afternoon, as the Berwick Varsity Bulldogs battled the Dallas Mountaineers Varsity Softball 2026 in a tightly contested affair that saw just one run cross the plate. Ultimately, it was Berwick who delivered the decisive blow in the bottom of the seventh inning, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
The game was a defensive showcase from the very first pitch, with both teams struggling to find an offensive rhythm against stellar pitching. Lacey Youngblood commanded the circle for Dallas, while Makayla Brown was equally impressive for Berwick, keeping batters off balance throughout the afternoon.
In the top of the first, the Dallas Mountaineers went down in order, setting an early tone for Brown's dominant performance. Berwick's first chance came in the bottom of the first when Makayla Brown singled to center field, later stealing second, but was left stranded as Emma Welsh struck out and Lauren Ashworth grounded out. The second inning saw Dallas's Cadance Hudgins strike out and Alyssa Traver fly out, before Sydney Haydu drew a walk. However, Madeline DeSanto struck out to end the threat. Berwick also struggled to capitalize in their half, despite Morgan Drauschak reaching on an error by Dallas shortstop Annie Osipower.
Dallas showed signs of life in the third, as Ava Knorr and Emma Fostock hit back-to-back singles, advancing to second and third respectively after Emma Eick's sacrifice bunt. The Mountaineers had runners in scoring position with one out, but Elliot Rigol lined out and Annie Osipower grounded out, leaving them empty-handed. Berwick responded with Ashlyn Klahold's single and Emma Welsh drawing a walk, but once again, the score remained 0-0.
The middle innings continued the pitching masterclass. Both teams were retired without a hit in the fourth, showcasing the pitchers' control and the defenses' tenacity. In the fifth, Dallas's Ava Knorr walked, and although Ella Sypniewski pinch ran, she was caught trying to advance on Emma Fostock's fielder's choice. Emma Eick then singled, putting runners at the corners, but Elliot Rigol struck out, ending another Dallas opportunity.
The sixth inning brought more drama. Cadance Hudgins ripped a triple for Dallas, putting the potential go-ahead run at third with only one out. The Mountaineers looked poised to break the deadlock, but Alyssa Traver's bunt resulted in an out at first, and Sydney Haydu popped out, extinguishing the threat. Berwick's Emma Welsh singled, followed by a single from Lauren Ashworth, but Lacey Youngblood dug deep, striking out Morgan Drauschak and Ayla Holloway, then getting Alex Levan to ground out, keeping the game scoreless.
With the game still deadlocked in the bottom of the seventh, Berwick finally found their moment. Brylee Weaver grounded out to start the inning. Liliana Belles then reached first base on an error by Dallas third baseman Alyssa Traver, immediately putting pressure on the Mountaineers' defense. Ashlyn Klahold followed with a clutch single, moving Liliana Belles to second. The stage was set for Makayla Brown, who stepped up and delivered a line drive single to center field, bringing Liliana Belles home for the game-winning run. The Berwick dugout erupted as they clinched a dramatic 1-0 victory.
Lacey Youngblood was phenomenal for Dallas, pitching 6.1 innings, allowing seven hits and one earned run, walking one and striking out nine. For Berwick, Makayla Brown pitched a masterful complete game shutout, going seven innings, scattering four hits, walking two, and striking out seven.
