SCRANTON — Some players put up big numbers. Others deliver when the moment demands it.
On Friday night, Scranton Prep’s Owen Jeffers did both.
In a showdown between Sportzwire’s No. 1-ranked small school and No. 1-ranked big school, Jeffers accounted for five touchdowns as the Cavaliers outlasted North Pocono, 37-36, in a triple-overtime thriller that has quickly entered the conversation for game of the year.
Jeffers completed 16 of 20 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns, adding 59 rushing yards and three scores on nine carries.
That’s 219 yards of total offense, five touchdowns and an 80% completion rate on one of District 2’s biggest stages.
The performance earns Jeffers this week’s Sportzwire Athlete of the Week, powered by HYDRABATHS® Swing Salt - where performance meets recovery.
Built for the Big Moment
While the numbers speak for themselves, Scranton Prep head coach Terry Gallagher believes it’s Jeffers’ competitiveness that truly separates him.
“We’re very fortunate to have Owen in our program,” Gallagher said. “He’s a hard working, smart, disciplined and tough kid. But his competitiveness is something that I believe makes him stand out.”
That competitive edge was on full display against North Pocono.
With the game extending through three overtime periods, Jeffers continued to deliver through the air, on the ground, and added 7 tackles on defense to help the Cavaliers find a way to finish.
“He loves competing, doesn’t back down from it, and embraces the big moments,” Gallagher said.
Friday night certainly qualified.
More Than One Big Game
For Gallagher, Jeffers’ impact goes well beyond one memorable performance.
“He’s done it for us in multiple games and out of multiple positions this year,” Gallagher said. “He continues to get better each week, and I think his competitiveness rubs off on the rest of the team.”
That versatility and willingness to compete wherever needed have made Jeffers an important piece of Scranton Prep’s success this season.
And against a North Pocono team that pushed the Cavaliers to the limit, those qualities helped make the difference.
Two top-ranked teams. Three overtimes. A one-point finish.
Five touchdowns from Owen Jeffers.
The statistics tell the story of a remarkable night. Gallagher’s words offer a glimpse of the player behind them.
Hardworking. Disciplined. Tough. Competitive.
And built for the big moment.
