Angelicola Fires 28 to Lead Growing Field at Pine Hills JV Tournament

Abington Heights eighth grader Gino Angelicola fired the low round as 68 seventh- and eighth-grade golfers from nine schools took part in the annual Pine Hills Junior Varsity Par 3 Chip & Putt Tournament.
The scores told part of the story Tuesday evening at Pine Hills. The size of the field may have told an even bigger one.
A total of 68 young golfers representing nine schools competed in the annual JV Par 3 Chip & Putt Tournament, another sign of the growing popularity of golf among younger athletes throughout the area.
Riverside golf coach and tournament organizer Ryan Lindsay couldn’t help but notice the difference.
“Last year we had half as many participants, so it’s great to see,” Lindsay said.
And with the larger field came some impressive golf.
Abington Heights eighth grader Gino Angelicola turned in the round of the tournament, shooting a 28 to claim the overall top spot.
West Scranton eighth grader Jake Holman followed with a 30, while Elk Lake eighth grader Trenton Miller shot 32 to complete the top three overall.

Among the seventh-grade boys, Valley View’s Talon Prutzman led the way with a 34. Lackawanna Trail teammates Luke Griggs and Cayden Laubagh followed at 36 and 37.

The eighth-grade boys produced the tournament’s deepest scores. Behind the overall top three, Abington Heights Chase Hnat shot 33, while Valley View’s Joe Caprari & Jack Coleman of Dunmore carded a 35 a piece.8th Grade Boys

On the girls side, Montrose eighth grader Abigail Keenan turned in the best round with a 45.
Valley View seventh grader Olivia McDonough followed with a 49, while teammate Miranda Pierson shot 50.

For an event designed to give younger golfers an opportunity to compete and develop, nearly doubling the field from a year ago might have been the biggest win of the night.
Sixty-eight golfers. Nine schools. And plenty of evidence that the future of local golf is growing.
