SCRANTON — The stakes felt familiar.

One year after North Pocono edged Abington Heights for district championship glory, the two rivals met again Wednesday afternoon at the University of Scranton Magis Field with another Class 5A title on the line.

This time, Abington Heights made sure the ending belonged to the Lady Comets.

Powered by a huge offensive performance from Evelyn Henkels and another dominant outing inside the circle from Adrianna Condrad, Abington Heights defeated North Pocono, 5-1, to capture the District 2 Class 5A Softball Championship.

The victory capped an impressive season for the Lady Comets, who entered the postseason riding one of the area’s strongest resumes. Their only loss of the year came back in early April against District 4 power Loyalsock Township, and Wednesday’s championship win added another statement to an already remarkable spring.

In a game expected to feature strong pitching and limited mistakes, Abington Heights struck first in the bottom of the second inning.

After Riley McColligan reached and set the table, Henkels launched a two-run home run to left field, instantly energizing the Abington Heights dugout and crowd.

The Lady Comets added more separation in the fourth inning when Henkels again came through in a key moment, delivering a two-run single to extend the lead to 4-0.

North Pocono continued to battle and finally broke through in the sixth when Riley Grambo doubled and later scored the Lady Trojans’ lone run of the afternoon.

But Condrad never allowed the momentum to fully shift.

The Abington Heights ace controlled the game throughout, striking out 10 while allowing just one run over seven complete innings without issuing a walk. Time and time again, Condrad found answers in key situations, helping keep North Pocono from mounting a larger rally.

North Pocono collected six hits in the loss, led by Grambo’s two-hit performance. Avarie Roscioli, Ady Iyoob, Anna Havenstrite and Olivia Charles also added hits for the Lady Trojans.

Amelia Bell started inside the circle for North Pocono, allowing four runs over 3 2/3 innings before Arielle Bell came on in relief and helped stabilize things late.

Abington Heights finished with five hits offensively but made them count, combining timely contact with strong pitching and clean situational softball.

For the Lady Comets, Wednesday’s win was more than just a championship, it was redemption, validation and the final piece to a season that consistently showed they were among the states elite.

And unlike last season, the trophy is headed back to Clarks Summit.
