Despite a strong showing at the plate and a solo home run from Dominick Zangardi, the Dallas Mountaineers fell just short in a 3-2 loss to the Pittston Patriots on Wednesday.

Dallas out-hit Pittston 8-7, with Zangardi and Kaden Coyne each collecting two hits. Zangardi’s solo shot to center in the fifth inning brought the Mountaineers within one, but they couldn’t push across the tying run.

Brady Youngblood tied the game at 1-1 earlier in the second inning with a line drive RBI single down the left field line.

Pittston took control in the top of the fifth, capitalizing on a Dallas error and getting a clutch RBI single from Jake Aftewicz to build a 3-1 lead. That proved to be the difference as Pittston pitcher Silvio Giardina held Dallas in check, striking out eight over six and two-thirds innings while allowing just two runs.

Aaron Patton got the start for Dallas, allowing three runs—two earned—on six hits while striking out four over four and two-thirds innings.

Defensively, Dallas turned a double play, while Pittston played error-free baseball and got steady contributions from seven different hitters.

The Mountaineers will look to bounce back Thursday in a matchup against Wyoming Valley West.
