When the District 2 Coaches Poll was released this week, there was a new name among the top programs: Wilkes-Barre Area. Ranked No. 5, the Wolfpack are earning recognition for a season that feels different — one built on grit, balance, and a belief that they belong with the best.
The Wolfpack have had flashes of potential in recent years, but this fall they’re putting it all together. Their breakthrough moment came in a thrilling 3-2 victory over Wyoming Seminary, one of the most tradition-rich programs in the state. Gianna Gustinucci, Megan Giomboni, and Kaytie Marx each found the back of the cage, a reminder that this isn’t a one-player team — it’s a group effort.
Just as impressive was the 1-0 shutout of Abington Heights, where Wilkes-Barre didn’t allow a single shot. Grace Simko’s penalty corner goal in the third quarter, assisted by Anna Vitali, wasn’t just a game-winner — it was a statement that the Wolfpack can thrive in pressure moments. And when they need to flex offensively, they’ve shown that too, rolling past Greater Nanticoke Area with an 8-2 victory earlier this season.
This season has been defined by players stepping into big roles:
Grace Simko – calm under pressure, delivering clutch goals when it matters most.
Anna Vitali – setting the tone with smart distribution and timely assists.
Gianna Gustinucci, Megan Giomboni, and Kaytie Marx – proving that Wilkes-Barre has the depth to beat anyone on any given night.
Together, they’ve created a team identity that balances defense with scoring firepower — and most importantly, belief.
For the Wolfpack, the No. 5 ranking isn’t just about where they stand today — it’s about how far the program has come. The players are starting to see themselves not as underdogs, but as contenders. They’ve shown they can outlast tough opponents, protect a lead, and celebrate wins that used to feel out of reach.
As the season rolls on, the schedule won’t get easier. But for Wilkes-Barre Area, that’s exactly the point. They’ve earned their way into the top five — and they’re hungry to prove they deserve to stay there.
