EDWARDSVILLE, PA – The Wilkes University softball team opened Landmark Conference play with a strong statement, sweeping Drew University in Saturday’s home doubleheader. The Colonels walked off Game 1 in thrilling fashion before locking down a shutout in Game 2 to move to 2-0 in league play.
Game 1 | Wilkes 4, Drew 3 (8 innings)
Wilkes battled back from an early 2-0 deficit, tying the game in the third inning with RBIs from Paige Randazzo and Talia Piragas. The game remained deadlocked until extras, when Drew took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth.
The Colonels responded with clutch hitting in the bottom half: Olivia Dougher tied it up with an RBI single, and Hannah Boyd played hero with a walk-off base hit to score Allyson Stafursky for the win.
Mia Butka went the distance in the circle, pitching all eight innings and securing her third win of the season while keeping her ERA at an impressive 1.75.
Game 2 | Wilkes 2, Drew 0
The Colonels carried their momentum into Game 2, scoring both of their runs in the third inning. Hana Cross crossed the plate on a single through the left side, and Piragas added the second run on a sacrifice fly from Randazzo.
Wilkes’ defense held strong behind Lauren DeMarco, who tossed a complete-game shutout with three strikeouts, improving to 4-1 on the season. The Wilkes lineup again showed depth, with Piragas, Butka, Dougher, Stafursky, Boyd, and Cross all collecting hits.
Wilkes will look to build on the sweep when they host Penn State Berks on Wednesday, March 26 in another home doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
