With youth football underway and the PIAA high school sports season just around the corner, the energy at John Henzes Memorial Stadium on Sunday was undeniable. The annual ACCJFL Referee Training Day Scrimmage featured the Valley View Jr Cougars and Dunmore Jr Bucks β but it was also about much more than just the players on the field.
PIAA officials and new recruits took part in an on-field learning experience, gaining live reps, feedback, and a front-row view of what it takes to manage a game fairly and confidently.
In a time when sports across the country are experiencing a shortage of referees and umpires, Sunday offered a positive sign: numbers were up, and so was the enthusiasm. Many newcomers expressed a love for the game and a desire to give back through officiating β a role that is becoming more essential than ever.
As youth leagues begin and high school teams prepare to kick off their fall campaigns, itβs clear the season is in good hands β and good whistles.
