Wallenpaupack, PA – In a spirited Coaches vs. Cancer matchup dubbed "The Pretty in Pink Classic," Delaware Valley topped Wallenpaupack, 53-29, in a boys' high school basketball game Friday night at Wallenpaupack High School.
The event not only showcased intense basketball action but also united the community in a powerful display of support for cancer survivors.
Delaware Valley asserted dominance early with a strong first quarter, leading 10-5. They extended their advantage in the second quarter, going into halftime up 29-17. The Warriors’ defensive pressure stifled Wallenpaupack’s offense throughout, limiting their scoring opportunities.
Sam Wood and Tyler Lombardo spearheaded Delaware Valley's attack, each tallying 15 points. Wood electrified the game with four three-pointers, particularly dominating in the third quarter. Lombardo added two three-pointers and 11 second-quarter points to keep Delaware Valley in control.
For Wallenpaupack, Justin Blanding delivered a standout performance, leading his team with 15 points, including one three-pointer. Nick VanBuskirk added 8 points but struggled to find consistent offensive support as Delaware Valley's defense prevailed.
Ella Smith Too Much for Lady Warriors
The Wallenpaupack girls’ defeated DV 38-26 on Friday night. Ella Smith was the standout player for Wallenpaupack, scoring 19 points, including a three-pointer and an impressive 8 out of 13 free throws. Sarah Decker contributed 9 points, while Fiona Shanaberger added 3 points.
Wallenpaupack capitalized on free throws, converting 15 out of 27 attempts, compared to Delaware Valley’s 4 of 8.
For Delaware Valley, Krystina Orby led the team with 6 points, followed by Amanda Aragona with 5. Despite Delaware Valley’s efforts, they struggled offensively.
The win improves Wallenpaupack’s record to 6-6, while Delaware Valley drops to 5-7.
Special Events: Pretty in Pink Classic
The evening wasn’t just about basketball. It was part of the "Pretty in Pink Classic," a Coaches vs. Cancer event. Between the boys’ and girls’ games, fans participated in a 'Streamer Toss' tradition, tossing pink streamers onto the court following the first point scored.
At halftime of the girls’ game, cancer survivors were honored in a moving 'Survivor Recognition Ceremony.' Survivors joined both teams at center court to receive flowers and hear an inspirational message, creating a heartfelt moment of solidarity.
