CLARKS SUMMIT — The bats came alive in a big way for Abington on Wednesday, as they erupted for 11 runs in the third inning to cruise past West Scranton 16-0 in a District 17 12U elimination game at Clarks Summit.
Max Vazquez led the charge with two home runs in the same inning, driving in three and igniting a momentum-swinging frame that left little doubt about the outcome. Vazquez’s solo shot to right field opened the scoring in the third, and his three-run blast to center capped off a dominant offensive outburst.
Abington struck first in the opening inning on an RBI single from Penn Eckenrode and added two more in the second thanks to a Dylan Lyle groundout and a run scored on a wild pitch. But the third inning was the turning point.
Lucas Deschaine drove in a run with a base hit, Oliver Giroux followed with a two-RBI single, Ben Hillebrand was hit by a pitch to plate another run, Julian McDonough crushed a two-run double, and Vazquez delivered his second homer of the inning to break the game wide open.
Eckenrode was efficient on the mound, allowing just two hits in three shutout innings while striking out three and walking none. He also contributed with a pair of hits at the plate and played clean defense, leading Abington with three fielding chances.
Abington pounded out 15 hits as a team, with Deschaine, Patrick Keeler, Giroux, Eckenrode, Vazquez, and Jaxon Hizny all collecting two hits apiece. The team didn’t commit a single error.
Ben DeLuca and Duffy Shrive were bright spots for West Scranton, each recording a hit in the top of the lineup. Jackson Griffiths started on the hill for West Scranton, striking out four before running into trouble in the third.
With the win, Abington continues its march through the District 17 bracket, and now advance to the championship game vs the winner of West Scranton and Moosic.
