One swing. One pitch. One defensive gem. That’s all it took for Valley View to punch their ticket to the PIAA 4A quarterfinals.
Taylor Cawley delivered a complete-game masterpiece and launched a go-ahead solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to lift the Cougars past Northern Lebanon, 1-0, in a first-round pitcher’s duel on Monday, June 2, 2025.
Cawley was dominant from the circle, allowing just two hits over seven shutout innings. She struck out six and didn’t walk a single batter, throwing 68 pitches — 56 for strikes. She was equally clutch at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a towering home run to center that proved to be the game-winner.
But the night’s biggest moment didn’t come from the long ball.
In a tie game, shortstop Kalli Karwowski made what could be remembered as the defensive play of Valley View’s season. A sharp grounder deflected off third base and took a wild hop, but Karwowski adjusted on a dime, snared it cleanly, and fired a perfect strike across the diamond to beat the runner by a step — ending the inning and keeping the shutout intact.
Offensively, Valley View was held to just three hits — one each from Ella Swingle, Cora Castellani, and Cawley — but made the most of it. Castellani and Swingle each added a stolen base, while Valley View left six runners stranded.
Lynsie Mauser pitched as well as any coach could ask for Northern Lebanon. The Viking ace allowed three hits and one run over six innings, striking out seven and walking three on 108 pitches.
