Valley View opened its 2025 football season with a 14-10 win over Scranton Prep in Archbald, a matchup between two of District 2’s most consistent contenders .
Scranton Prep struck first late in the opening quarter when Mackey Lynett pounced on a loose ball in the end zone for a defensive touchdown. Tyler Bianchi added the extra point for a 7-0 lead. Valley View answered quickly as Caleb Brown connected with Gabe Davis on a 48-yard scoring strike, with Braden Loff’s kick evening the score at 7-7.
In the second quarter, Bianchi gave the Cavaliers the edge again, converting a 25-yard field goal to make it 10-7 at the half. The Cougars seized control in the third when Tyler Muchal broke through for an 18-yard touchdown run, and Loff’s kick pushed Valley View ahead 14-10. From there, the defense held firm, keeping Prep off the board the rest of the way .
Statistically, both teams mirrored each other on the ground, each finishing with 121 rushing yards. Muchal powered Valley View with 62 yards and the decisive touchdown, while Jeffery Wasilchak chipped in 43 yards on seven carries . Brown managed 81 passing yards, highlighted by his deep strike to Davis. For Scranton Prep, Anthony Prince led with 68 rushing yards, and Owen Jeffers completed four passes for 31 yards .
The win adds to Valley View’s recent history of strong season starts. The Cougars, who have captured multiple District 2 Class 4A titles in recent years , once again leaned on balance and resilience. Scranton Prep, a perennial Class 3A contender with back-to-back titles of its own , showed flashes but could not capitalize late.
Both programs entered this fall coming off seasons where their playmakers left marks on the District 2 stat sheets. Last year, Valley View’s Preston Reed, Zach Cwalinski, and Nick Kucharski all ranked among the region’s rushing leaders , while Scranton Prep’s Louis Paris and Will McPartland each eclipsed 1,000 yards on the ground . The opener hinted that new faces are ready to step up in 2025.
Valley View will look to carry momentum into next week’s trip to Crestwood, while Scranton Prep aims to regroup as its early schedule unfolds.
