JESSUP — Valley View made a statement under the lights in their final Majors All-Star pool play game (District 32), breaking open a tight contest with a 10-run third inning to defeat Carbondale 13-2 on Thursday at Jessup Youth Sports Complex.
Valley View opened the scoring early, as Kaleb Wallace tagged up and scored in the bottom of the first. But Carbondale responded right back. Jacoby Vaughn ripped a single down the left field line to bring in a run, and Jaydryan Serrano followed by drawing a hit-by-pitch to tie things up at 1-1.
Carbondale briefly took the lead in the top of the second before Valley View answered in the home half. Back-to-back bases-loaded walks drawn by TJ Callejas and Larry Hallett pushed Valley View ahead 3-2 heading into the third.
That’s when the floodgates opened.
The third inning saw Valley View piece together a complete offensive surge—highlighted by a two-run single from Daniel Greenburg, a booming two-RBI triple off the bat of Hallett, and a bases-clearing single by Wallace. Yadriel Rodriguez also chipped in with a run-scoring single, and Silas Hunt grounded into a fielder’s choice that brought home another. In total, 10 runs crossed the plate, giving Valley View full control.
Zurn got the start on the mound and delivered a solid performance, allowing just one hit and two unearned runs over three innings while striking out four. Greenburg came in for the fourth and slammed the door with three straight strikeouts to close things out.
Offensively, Valley View was balanced and efficient. Hallett led the team with three RBIs from the nine-spot, finishing 1-for-1 with a triple. Wallace had a team-high three RBIs on his lone hit, while Greenburg, Rodriguez, Zurn, Hunt, and Tommy Scagliotti each added a hit. As a team, Valley View stayed disciplined at the plate, drawing seven walks.
Carachilo took the mound for Carbondale and battled through two innings, striking out five and allowing just one earned run on a single hit. Vaughn, Serrano, and the Carbondale squad showed fight early, playing with grit in the opening frames before the Valley View offense took command.
With the win, Valley View ends pool play and their All Star season on high note securing a victory, while Carbondale closes out pool play with their heads high after a tournament showing filled with effort and heart.
