Thomas “Tom” Pidgeon — a beloved veteran, pioneering youth-sports leader, and lifelong pillar of Jermyn and upper Lackawanna County — has passed away. Best known as “Tom,” he first made his mark as a standout student-athlete at St. Patrick’s High School before going on to serve in the Airborne Division of the U.S. Army.
After returning home, Tom helped found and lead the Lakeland Junior Football Association, coaching teams and co-creating a sports complex and community ice skating rink. He was instrumental in behind-the-scenes planning for parades and holiday celebrations featuring Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. In recognition of his tireless community service, the Borough of Jermyn honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.
Tom’s love for sports ran deep. As a coach, he led squads across multiple age groups and even created a “College Recruiting Film” to give local athletes a broader stage . His legacy on the field continued through his children—several of whom contributed to Lakeland High School championships—reflecting the same athletic spirit Tom embodied and inspired.
When not at a game, Tom enjoyed simpler pursuits: tending his garden, tossing horseshoes, or tuning into his favorite country music.
He leaves behind an immense family legacy—12 children, 31 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren—and an even larger impact on his community.
Mr. Pidgeon, thank you for your service, your unwavering leadership, and for nurturing the next generation. Rest easy — we’ve got this from here.
