Susquehanna Wins District 2 Single-A Championship

After MMI took the lead on a buzzer beating three pointer, Susquehanna head coach Jeff Baldwin sat his team down. “I told them you gotta really work hard, you gotta work this next quarter to win this, they aren’t going away.” The Lady Sabers got six straight points from Lauren Huyck to build a five point lead and held on to defeat MMI Prep to win the District 2 Single-A Championship 37-34. Huyck scored a game high 17 points and Kiera Burke added 10 for the District Champions.
Susquehanna got to an early 5-0 lead as Huyck scored all seven of the Sabres points in the quarter. MMI kept it close with baskets by Chloe Allen and a three pointer by Arushi Solgama as Susquehanna led 7-5 at the end of the first quarter. After both teams traded free throws, the Sabres got a free throw and a three pointer by Burke to build up a six point lead and led 16-9 at halftime.
The Sabers started with a basket to build the lead to nine. Solgama got a basket and then MMI got a steal and a basket. Anna Drobnock hit a three pointer to cut the lead down to two. Huyck got a basket but Chloe Allen hit a three pointer then Solgama hit a pair of free throws to make it 21-20 Preppers. Susquehanna tied the game on a free throw by Madyson Beach then a basket by Burke. Just before the third quarter horn, Drobnock hit a three pointer in the corner to give MMI a 24-23 after three quarters.
Huyck scored six straight points for the Sabres to make it a five point lead. Drobnock hit a three pointer to cut the lead down to two. Susquehanna got a basket to make the lead four but a basket and a pair of free throws by Georgia Washko tied the game up at 31. Burke gave the Sabres back the lead at 33-31. The Preppers looked to tie the game but the closest they could muster was one with two minutes left. Burke and Beach got baskets to extend the lead to five as Susquehanna took the 37-34 victory over MMI. Susquehanna ends their season as District Champions. Anna Drobnock scored a team high 13 points and Chloe Allen added 9.
