At Montrose High School, junior Cara Evans has made a name for herself as one of the top young athletes in northeastern Pennsylvania. Splitting her time between tennis and softball, Evans’ talent, discipline, and drive have already rewritten the record books for the Meteors and she’s not slowing down anytime soon.

“I play tennis more often and I like it more,” Evans said. “Softball is kind of my side quest, something I do for fun in the spring.”

A Love for Tennis — and the Challenge It Brings

Introduced to tennis by her father before she was even four years old, Evans quickly fell in love with the sport’s individual challenge.

“In tennis, you’re out there by yourself,” she explained. “No one else is making mistakes, everything depends on what you do. There’s no excuses.”

That mindset has propelled her to the top of her game. Evans earned Lackawanna League and Regional All-Star honors her freshman and sophomore year, and Lackawanna League Player of the Year, as both a sophomore and junior. She finished second at Districts her first two seasons, but in her junior year, she made Montrose history, recently capturing first at Districts for girls' tennis singles and then going on to become the first-ever tennis State Champion from Montrose High School.

“It’s pretty unique,” Evans said. “Montrose is a very small school. Being undefeated and winning States is rare and incredible, and I’m really proud of it.”

Training, Dedication, and Balance

Evans’ success is no accident. Her training schedule often exceeds 12 hours a week, sometimes stretching across 20 consecutive days before taking a short break. She has worked with multiple individual coaches over the years and sometimes even competes against college players to sharpen her skills.

Her dad continues to play a huge role in her development, researching the best fitness routines and nutritional strategies to support her game. “He’s put in so much time with me,” Evans said. “He definitely inspires me. He wants me to succeed, and I couldn’t do it without him.”

Softball: The Fun Side Quest

While tennis is her primary focus, Evans enjoys the camaraderie of softball, where she’s played for five years and holds down first base for the Meteors.

“I like the team aspect,” she said. “Playing with my friends is a nice break from tennis.”

Beyond the Court and Field

Academically, Evans shines just as brightly. She’s a member of the National Honor Society, maintains high honors, and currently ranks second in her class. Though undecided on her future career path, she’s considering studying law, dermatology, or physical therapy.

Off the court, she gives back to her community by volunteering at her church, a reflection of the grounded attitude that has earned her the respect of peers and coaches alike.

Looking Ahead

When asked if she feels pressure after such a remarkable season, Evans keeps it simple: “I just enjoy it, so I don’t feel much pressure.”

Her focus remains on continual growth, competing in both in-state and out-of-state tournaments during the offseason, with hopes of playing college tennis while earning a great education.

“The entire Montrose community has been really nice to have behind me,” Evans said. “It’s been incredible.”

Congratulations to Cara Evans, Sportzwire’s Wired Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Envy Electrical, a champion on the court, a leader in the classroom, and a role model in her community.
