SCRANTON, PA – In a dramatic comeback, Scranton overcame a sluggish start to defeat Cheltenham 50-45 in the opening round of the PIAA 6A State Playoffs on Saturday night. The Knights, who were held scoreless in the first quarter, stormed back with a dominant second-half performance to punch their ticket to the second round.
Slow Start, Big Finish
Scranton’s offense was nowhere to be found early, as Cheltenham’s defense stifled the Knights, holding them scoreless in the first quarter. Meanwhile, the Panthers built an early lead, going up 8-0 after the first eight minutes. By halftime, Cheltenham remained in control, leading 17-11.
But whatever was said in Scranton’s locker room at halftime worked. The Knights came out with relentless energy in the third quarter, outscoring Cheltenham 19-6 to take the lead. Senior guard Tony Battaglia spearheaded the comeback, scoring 18 points, including two clutch three-pointers and a near-perfect night from the free-throw line (10-for-13).
Scranton continued their surge in the fourth quarter, putting up 20 points to seal the win. Jaheam Roberts (9 points) and Pedro Lugo (8 points) provided key baskets down the stretch, while Deondre Dickey and Johnathon Levine combined for 11 points.
Cheltenham’s Standout Effort Falls Short
Cheltenham looked poised for an upset after a strong first half, led by Osei Johnson’s game-high 16 points. Kamal Mason added 13, but the Panthers struggled offensively in the second half, scoring just 28 points after the break. Johnson’s four three-pointers kept Cheltenham in the game, but Scranton’s defense tightened up when it mattered most.
What’s Next?
With the win, Scranton advances to the second round, where they will face the winner of Parkland and Downingtown West. If the Knights can replicate their second-half intensity, they’ll be a tough out in the tournament.
Cheltenham’s season comes to an end after a valiant effort, but the Panthers showcased resilience and talent that will leave a lasting impact.
For Scranton, the journey continues. If this comeback was any indication, the Knights are built for the big stage.
