Lackawanna Trail running back Isaac Ryon entered the Lions’ Week 10 matchup vs the Riverside Vikings with 1,730 rushing yards and 28 rushing touchdowns on the season. In the final regular season game of his high school career, he surpassed the 2,000 yard mark and 30 touchdown mark for the season. Ryon rushed for 370 yards and five touchdowns, bringing his season total to 2,100 rushing yards and 33 rushing touchdowns. Lackawanna Trail Head Coach Steve Jervis said “Isaac is such a dynamic back. I feel like all we really need to do is get him in space and he kinda takes care of the rest.”
The Lions dominated Riverside on the road 40-14, giving them their third straight LFC Division III Championship. The Lions gained over 400 yards on the ground as a team, with quarterback Tyler Jervis adding 55 rushing yards and Carter Edwards running for 19 yards and a touchdown on four carries. “I give out offensive line credit, they were slanting and moving a real lot, obviously some very talented players over there, and that’s really how we set up our offense,” Coach Jervis said.
The Lions got out to a hot start, taking a 14-0 lead after the first quarter. Both touchdowns were Ryon runs of 44 and 79 yards respectively. “We started off slow, but eventually started wearing them down and holes started to open up,” Ryon said following the win.
Ryon added three more touchdowns on the day, they went for 66, 60 and 77 yards in that order, and would set the Lions up with a 40-0 lead entering the fourth quarter. “I’ve been running behind these guys my whole life, and I don’t think I could have it any other way,” Ryon said. “I can’t thank them enough and they should get more recognition for what they do.”
Another unsung element of the Lions win was their defense. They held the Vikings to a season-low 14 points and didn’t allow a score until the fourth quarter. “Defensively we had our ups and downs, we graduated a couple really good players last year, but I think tonight was our most all around, best defensive performance,” Coach Jervis said.
The Lions improved to 9-1 and will be the No. 1 seed in the District 2/11 1A subregional. The Vikings dropped to 8-2 and will be the No. 2 seed in the District 2 2A playoffs.
