Riverside Depth Overpowers Elk Lake Duo in Varsity Boys Commissioner’s Meet

The weather drastically changed for final race of the day at the Lackawanna County Commissioner's Meet the Varsity Boys race. Even though the skies opened up and rained from start to finish that didn’t deter the 1-2 punch that Elk Lake has been dishing out for over a year now. They lead from start to finish Kendle gapping Cody by 12 seconds at the finish and Cody putting another 11 seconds on the rest of the field.

Elk Lakes Parker Upright provided another low stick for the Warriors taking 4th place and his brother Trevor provided even more firepower for the squad with a 15th place finish. However, the real story of this race wasn’t the individuals it was the awesome team battles. Elk Lake used its home course advantage over Riverside earlier this week in the cluster meet taking a big early season win over the Vikings. Today Riversides depth managed to outlast the front running of Elk Lake as the Vikings took the team win with 51 points.

The Vikings had depth that no other team could match paired with a great kick from Mikey Schimelenig to take 3rd place and break up a 1,2 3 finish from Elk Lake (as he did just a few days ago in the cluster meet). Behind him his teammates took 7th, 11th, 12th, and 18th. Taking down an Elk Lake team that finished 3rd in the state last year (and didn’t lose any runners) shows that district 2 has some of the best small school talent in the state this year!

1 point separated Elk Lake from Wallenpaupack in the standing as Elk Lake finished with 61 points and Wallenpaupack had 62. Aiden Janowicz opened up his season for Wallenpaupack holding on for 8th place after a fast start (Aiden sat out the cluster meet early this week due to illness). Closing quickly on him was his teammate Chase Predmore with a 10th place finish. Wallenpaupack really showed off their team’s depth taking 8 of the top 25 spots in the race, including 5 in the top 17!

A special shout out to all the runner out there that lost a shoe and kept on going! Two that I saw included West Scranton’s Seamus Wallace who held on to finish in 5th place and Elk Lake’s Whalen Kinney. Ice those feet and get ready for a season of fast times!

Congratulations to all the runners and Medal winners from todays race
