CENTER VALLEY, PA — Pope John Paul II delivered a clean, composed, and complete performance Thursday afternoon at DeSales University, blanking District 2 champ Mid Valley 5-0 to advance to the PIAA Class 4A Semifinals.
Capitalizing on an early error and riding a lights-out outing from starter Tyler Tindall, the Panthers struck early and never let up. Tindall was in full control from start to finish, throwing a complete-game two-hitter, striking out four, and walking just one.
Pope John Paul II opened the scoring in the first with two runs crossing on a defensive miscue, then extended the lead in the second when Carson Glose drove in a run with a single. The Panthers padded their cushion in the sixth and closed the door defensively with sharp glove work and a double play.
Luke Terlesky led the offense with 3 RBIs, including a key late-inning knock that widened the gap. Chase Frantz was nearly automatic at the plate, going 3-for-4, while Glose added 2 hits and an RBI of his own.
The Panthers tallied 10 hits and didn’t allow Mid Valley’s bats to find rhythm — holding the Spartans to just two hits from Anthony Balashaitis and Nick Mills. Mid Valley starter Lorenzo Hernandez battled for 5.1 innings, striking out six despite facing consistent pressure from a deep Pope John Paul II lineup.
Now, Pope John Paul II advances to face unbeaten Montoursville, the District 4 champion, who edged Fleetwood 6-4 in Thursday’s other quarterfinal matchup.
