The humidity was at a very uncomfortable level for the Varsity Girls Lackawanna County Commissioner's Meet as 9 teams and 94 runners took the line. This was by far the most exciting race of the day and patience paid off for Pittston Area’s Isabella Dessoye. The race started with Wallenpaupack’s Kelcie Fillebrown jumping out to an early lead up the first hill. Out of the second loop around the pond and tennis court a pack of 3 of the area's better runners emerged in the lead, Sadie Loftus from Valley View, June Brown from Wallenpaupack, Kendyl Weisgold from Elk Lake. This pack of three would battle much of the remaining way, coming out of the pool section of the race with about a mile to go Sadie Loftus was in command of the race followed by Kendyl Weisgold. However by this point Isabella started making her way up though the pack and passed June for 3rdplace.
Heading into the last hill Isabella was in 2nd but closing on Sadie, it wasn’t until she crested the final hill heading into the straight away that the spectators could clearly see that Isabella’s race plan worked to perfection taking a 20 second win.
The heat and humidity took its toll on many of the runners as virtually every girl found their way to the ground after crossing the finish line. However, one runner from Old Forge caught my eye, not because of her performance or her effort but for her unrelentless smile throughout the entire race! When everyone else looked like they punched a ticket on the pain train number 708 Brynn Negvesky used the power of positivity to take home a 29th place finish for the Blue Devil’s of Old Forge.
