Holy Cross stayed red-hot on Thursday afternoon with a dominant 12-0 shutout over Carbondale Area, fueled by a lockdown pitching effort from Ava Schmidt and an electric day at the plate from sophomore standout Jules Galella.
Jules Galella was unstoppable once again, going 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs and extending her perfect start to the season—now 6-for-6 through two games. The sophomore shortstop set the tone with a run-scoring single in the first and continued to produce every time she stepped into the box, showing poise beyond her years.
Ava Schmidt controlled the game from the circle, tossing five shutout innings while striking out 10 and allowing just one hit. The senior also helped her own cause with a solo home run in the first inning.
The Crusaders exploded for seven runs in the first, getting key contributions from every part of the lineup. Peyton Graboske doubled and drove in a run, Megan Hassaj added an RBI single, and Grace Rogers crushed a two-run double to the gap. Galella and Graboske each added another RBI in the second to stretch the lead to 9-0.
Mia Galella launched a solo home run in the fourth, and the Crusaders tacked on two more runs before sealing the mercy-rule win.
Holy Cross finished with 10 hits and six stolen bases, with Gianna Coroniti and Lila Kolcharno each swiping multiple bags. Defensively, the Crusaders were flawless, committing zero errors and getting 10 defensive plays from Graboske behind the plate.
Carbondale’s Maurie Newcomb recorded the lone hit for the Chargerettes, while Riley Pietrowski struck out five but took the loss after allowing 12 runs (10 earned) in four innings.
Holy Cross will be back in action Friday at home against West Scranton.
