In an unexpected and thrilling upset, Penn State Wilkes-Barre Men took down the #1 seed Penn State Mont Alto, 72-64, at home on Tuesday night. This victory came as redemption for Wilkes-Barre, who had previously fallen to Mont Alto on January 14th with a 91-70 loss on the road. After a hard-fought battle and win against Mont Alto, Wilkes-Barre moved to the 5th seed, while Mont Alto slipped to the 2nd seed in the standings.
Wilkes-Barre was led by an outstanding performance by #13 Jedidiah Ashton, who tallied a game high 22 points, 4 assists, and 6 rebounds. Christopher Killings chipped in 12 points and 7 rebounds, playing a key role in the the victory. Jeremiah Miller also contributed 10 points points, 3 assists, and 1 rebound helping to balance the scoring effort and deliver a strong team performance.
Mont Alto, despite the loss, had strong individual performances. Caleb Eckert was their leading scorer with 19 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 steal, while Veron Talla contributed 16 points, 9 rebounds, and 1 assist. These efforts weren't enough to overcome Wilkes-Barre's momentum, and Mont Alto's bid to finish the season atop the standings was dashed.
This upset marks a turning point for Wilkes-Barre, as they now stand as the 5th seed, with their eye now set on securing a strong postseason run. Showing they can compete with the best and fighting to end the regular season strong and keep momentum going into playoffs, Wilkes-Barre will look to build on this victory and secure another win against PS York on Friday during Senior Night and their final home game of the season.
