Pittston Area’s softball team bounced back in a big way on Wednesday, powering past Crestwood 10–4 in an eight-inning showdown that showcased grit, timely hitting, and standout pitching from junior Samantha Herbert.
After trailing early, the Patriots clawed back to even the score by the fourth inning and held Crestwood off until the bats came alive in the eighth. Pittston Area erupted for six runs in the extra frame to put the game out of reach, improving their season record to 3–3.
Herbert was a two-way force for the Patriots. In the circle, she threw all eight innings, allowing eight hits and four earned runs while striking out four without surrendering a walk. At the plate, she went 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs to lead the offensive charge.
Joining her with strong performances were:
Gabby Roman, who went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored
Marina Antal, who reached base three times, scored twice, and added an RBI
Gabby Gorzkowski, who chipped in an RBI single
Jillian Haas, who stayed hot at the plate with a 2-for-4 outing
The Patriots totaled 13 hits on the day, showing depth and consistency throughout the lineup. Kelcey Podwika and Val Colon also made their presence felt, combining to score three key runs despite limited at-bats.
Crestwood opened the game with two early runs in the first and later added two more in the sixth to tie it, but couldn’t respond in extras. Brooke Lenahan pitched all eight innings for the Comets, giving up 13 hits and 10 runs (4 earned) while striking out six.
Offensively, Crestwood was led by Madison Mendrzycki, who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Brooke Lenahan, who added a hit, walk, and scored twice.
Pittston Area’s offense, however, proved too much in the end as they pulled away late to secure the victory and some mid-season momentum. With several players swinging hot bats and Herbert finding her rhythm in the circle, the Patriots will look to build on this performance heading into the second half of their schedule.
