OLYPHANT — Mid Valley made a strong opening statement in Junior Teeners sectional play, blanking Hanover Area 12-0 behind a fifth-inning offensive explosion and shutdown pitching Tuesday night at Spartan Stadium.
Mid Valley broke a close game wide open with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth, sealing the run-rule victory in style. The offensive barrage was fueled by key at-bats from Aiden Siegfried (RBI walk), Jackson Zuraski (2-run single), Colin Thatcher (RBI single), Nicholas Kovaleski (RBI walk), and Anthony Mancuso, who capped it off with a two-run knock.
Zuraski was locked in on the mound, tossing a five-inning complete-game shutout. He allowed just three hits while striking out three and walking one, keeping the Hanover bats quiet from start to finish.
Mid Valley first got on the board in the second, courtesy of a clutch RBI single from Jackson Bohanski. He finished the game 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs from the nine spot. Bradley Siegfried also collected two hits, as part of Mid Valley’s 11-hit performance. Thatcher and Eric Melesky each drew two of the team’s 11 total walks.
On the basepaths, Mid Valley was relentless—swiping eight stolen bases, including two each by Nick Hricenak and Siegfried. The defense stayed sharp, turning a double play and committing zero errors. Aiden Siegfried led the way with four defensive chances.
Hanover Area had hits from Nate Ross, Brayden Tarnalicki, and Angel Vergara. Ryan Bennett started on the mound and struck out four through 3.2 innings. The team played clean defensively, with Leo Seiger handling a game-high seven chances in the field.
Game 2 of the series is set for Wednesday night back at Spartan Stadium, where Mid Valley looks to close things out, while Hanover Area aims to bounce back and even the series.
