The Lady Wreckers edged out a thrilling 5-4 comeback win over the Northwest on Wednesday, thanks to a clutch two-run double by Reya Gregory and a dominant pitching performance from Briella Vanblargan.
Vanblargan was electric in the circle, tossing a complete game and striking out 12 batters across six innings. She allowed five hits, four earned runs, and walked two, finishing with a final pitch count of 92 (62 strikes).
Northwest came out strong, plating a run in the first and adding two more in the third and fourth to take a 4-3 lead. Olivia M drove in the opening run with a groundout, while C.C. R laced an RBI single to right and Saige S brought in two more with a hard-hit lineout in the fourth.
The Wreckers answered with a three-run rally in the third inning, including a daring steal of home and a bases-loaded walk to Audrey Wagner. Trailing 4-3 in the fourth, Reya Gregory delivered the biggest swing of the game, sending a double into the gap that scored two and flipped the scoreboard in favor of the Wreckers.
Offensively, Jenna Jones paced the Wreckers with a 2-for-2 day, scoring once and adding two stolen bases. Gregory finished 1-for-2 with a double and a team-high 2 RBIs. Myah Makowiec and Kenzie Clabia each reached base and combined for five stolen bases. As a team, the Wreckers tallied 14 stolen bases, using aggressive baserunning to manufacture runs in key spots.
On the Northwest side, Kylie T had a standout game, going 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Olivia M and C.C. R each contributed RBIs, and Grace G swiped two bases to help keep pressure on the Wreckers defense.
Roslyn P threw all five innings for Northwest, giving up five runs (all earned) on five hits, walking five and striking out seven over 98 pitches.
Despite the loss, Northwest showed tremendous heart and grit in a back-and-forth contest that featured timely hitting, speed on the bases, and quality pitching on both sides. The Wreckers now ride the momentum into the next round with confidence, while Northwest walks away with heads held high after a well-fought effort.
