Lackawanna League Week 2 Cross Country Rundown: Big Wins and Standout Performances

Elk Lake, Montrose and Blue Ridge traveled to Western Wane to face off against Lakeland and Lackawanna Trail.

On the girls side the Elk Lake, Montrose and Blue Ridge cluster dominated, each coming away with 3 wins.

Kendyl Weisgold flowed up her top 5 finish at the Commissioner’s Invite with a cluster meet win putting up a time of 20:17 beating Montrose’s Avery Kerr by over 30 seconds. After Avery came through the 3rd, 4th, and 5th runners finished in a 5 second gap. Elk Lake’s Kylee Pond and Madison Kerr finished 3rd and 4th, just 2 seconds apart with times of 21:36 and 21:38. Kaitlyn Kloss rounded out the top 5 in an awesome race just 3 seconds behind the Elk Lake duo and breaking 22 minutes with a time of 21:41.

On the boys side Elk Lake pulled off their first 1, 2, 3 finish of the season to guarantee 3 wins and remain undefeated and one of the favorites to win the league title.

Kendel Jones continues his assault on cross country courses and the record books getting another win to his name and putting up an impressive time of 16:18. He was followed by two teammates Cody Adams 16:33 and Parker Upright 16:49 for a 1,2,3 Elk Lake finish. Lakeland’s top runner Henry Decker also broke 17 minutes with a time of 16:51 and last week’s cluster meets winner Avery Ronchi from Lackawanna Trail finished in 5th place with a time of 17:09.

 

Mid Valley, West Scranton and Scranton traveled to Wallenpaupack to take on Honesdale and Delaware Valley.

For the girls, Delaware Valley, Honesdale and Wallenpaupack all took 3 wins over Mid Valley, West Scranton and Scranton teams.

Delaware Valley’s Grace Holderith took the early lead and didn’t look back, putting up an impressive sub 20 performance and stopping the clock at 19:56. June Brown and Kelcie Fillebrown took 2nd and 3rd for Wallenpaupack nearly 30 seconds behind Grace. Katherine Legg was Honesdale’s top runner in 4th place and Scranton’s Bianca Perez-Temozihu rounded out the top 5. Wallenpaupack showed off great depth on their home course taking 4 of the top 7 spots and 7 of the top 17.

On the boys side the team battle between last year's league champs Wallenpaupack and Mid Valley was the race of the week. Wallenpaupack was fresh off a top 3 finish at the Commissioner’s Invite and on their home course. However, Mid Valley put 5 in the top 9 to come away with 3 wins.  Wallenpaupack also showed great depth in this race taking 7 of the top 14 spots and notching 2 wins over Scranton and West Scranton.

For much of the race the top 3 runners of Jacob Borrelli (Mid Valley), Seamus Wallace (West Scranton) and Aiden Janowicz (Wallenpaupack) ran as a pack. It wasn’t until about the 2 mile mark that Aiden and Jacob opened up a small gap over Seamus. Heading into the last hill of the course at about 2.5 miles, Jacob began to break away from Aiden and finished in first with a time of 17:01 for the Spartans. Seamus closed hard over the last mile, running down Janowicz for 2nd place finishing in 17:07. Janowicz held onto 3rd place with a time of 17:21. Matthew Repecki started off conservatively before finding his groove around the mile mark where he moved up from 20th to top 10. Repecki continued to push the pace and finished in 4th place overall and was Mid Valley’s 2nd runner with a time of 17:40. Josh Burns from Mid Valley went out hard from the gun and held on to round out the top 5 with a time of 17:49.      

 

At Mcdade Park Susquehanna and Mountain View took on the cluster of Riverside Dunmore and Old Forge.

For the ladies of Old Forge proved to be the team to beat taking wins over both Mountain View and Susquhanna. They ran in pairs putting 6 in the top 14 taking 3rd and 4th, 6th and 7th, 13th and 14th.

Overall honors went far and away to Kiera Burke from Susquhanna with a time of 21:21. 2 minutes behind her was Mountain View’s Corinne Flynn with a time of 23:22. Next up was the pair from Old Forge Cali Talarico and Brynn Negvesky with times of 23:42 and 23:45. And rounding out the top 5 was Riverside's Kennedy Shimelfenig with a time of 25:16.

On the boy’s side Riverside fresh off their Commissioner Invite win proved to be too much to handle taking 5 of the top 6 spots.

Mikey Schimelefnig continues his impressive senior campaign with a win for Riverside in a time of 16:40. Fellow teammate Jack Davies took second in 17:06. Maxx Kelly from Susquehanna was the only runner that managed to split up the Riverside Route with a 3rd place finish of 17:17. Next two across the line were Andrew and Michael Connor from Riverside in 17:29 and 17:51.


Lastly Valley View's cluster of North Pocono and Abington hosted Scranton Prep and Holy Cross

On the girls side the Cluster of North Pocono, Abington and Valley View all posted two wins over Prep and Holy Cross and dominated the top 20 spots. The entire cluster ran extreamly strong placing 17 of the top 18 spots. 10 of those spots were claimed by Abington Heights, Valley View fresh off their Commissioner Invite win took 4 of the spots, North Pocono placed 3 and Holy Cross had 1 runner in the top 18.

Anna Pucilowski from Abington and Sadie Loftus of Valley View had another 1-2 finsh. Anna blitzed the course in a 17:50 and Sadie was over 90 seconds back. Rounding out the top 5 another half minute behind Sadie followed a trio of Abinigton runners all with in 6 seconds of each other Marley Gilboy took 3rd in 19:54, 4th was Morgan Kresge 19:59 and 5th close behind Calli Gilboy 20:00.

On the guys side Abington was the class of the cluster taking 2 wins, a 10 point win over Scranton Prep and 15 point win over Holy Cross, they finished in pairs taking 3rd and 4th, 8th and 9th, 13th and 14th, 16th and 17th. This race had a lot more variety compared to the girls with many of the teams placing 2-3 runners in the top 15 of the race. 

The runners that rose to the top were Thomas Gavin from Holy Cross pulling away for his first cluster win in a time of 16:44. Scranton Prep's Vincent O'Malley takes another 2nd place finish in as many weeks with a sub 17 performance of 16:57. The Abington Heights duo of Timothy Fogley and Jack Shoemaker were 3rd and 4th across the line 17:07 & 17:16. Rounding out the top 5 was Cooper courtright from Valley View in a 17:27.
