On a chilly Saturday afternoon, the Valley View softball team brought the heat — and none more than Senior standout Kalli Karwowski. The powerful right-handed hitter put on a show, belting two home runs and driving in three runs, as the Cougars blanked Parkland in a commanding 10-0 victory.
Valley View wasted no time jumping ahead, taking advantage of a Parkland miscue in the first inning that allowed two runs to score. Moments later, Zoie Krupovich ripped a double into the gap, pushing another run across and giving the Cougars an early cushion that would only grow.
After three quiet innings, Karwowski ignited the offense again in the fourth. She turned on an inside pitch and sent it soaring over the left-field fence for a solo shot, extending Valley View’s lead to 4-0 and sending the home dugout into a frenzy.
But the biggest fireworks came in the sixth inning. With two runners on and one out, Karwowski stepped to the plate once more. On a 1-1 count, she launched another no-doubter — this time a two-run homer to deep left that cleared the fence with ease. That blast opened the floodgates. The Cougars poured it on, with Krupovich and Ella Swingle each drawing bases-loaded walks, and Freshman Maggie Hallett slicing a double down the right-field line to bring home two more.
While the offense roared, pitcher Taylor Cawley quietly authored a masterpiece of her own in the circle. The right-hander allowed just five hits in six scoreless innings, striking out seven and walking only two. Her ability to work ahead in counts and keep Parkland hitters guessing was on full display, as she mixed speeds and hit her spots with precision.
Cora Castellani chipped in with two hits on the afternoon and, along with Karwowski, showcased Valley View’s aggressive style on the base paths. The Cougars combined for four stolen bases and forced Parkland’s defense to stay on its heels all game long.
Defensively, Valley View was flawless. Not a single error marred their effort, with Hallett anchoring the infield and recording seven putouts or assists.
For Parkland, Maria Moore tried to spark her team with a pair of singles, but Cawley and the Cougar defense never allowed the visitors to build any momentum.
Valley View, now riding high, looks to continue their hot start when they host Holy Redeemer on Tuesday.
