Sportzwire Spotlight Athlete: Jozshua Miner of Northwest

Jozshua Miner, a senior combo guard for the Northwest Rangers, has left an indelible mark on both his high school basketball program and his community. From breaking records to earning accolades, his journey from a promising freshman to a senior standout is one of dedication, perseverance, and leadership.

Jozshua's high school basketball journey began with a memorable performance in his freshman year. Despite being new to the high school stage, he made an immediate impact. On a chilly February evening in 2022, Jozshua scored a school-record 36 points in a playoff game against East Juniata, setting the tone for what would be an illustrious high school career. His impressive debut didn't just stop with the score, but showcased his potential as a clutch player capable of handling pressure and delivering when it mattered the most.

As Jozshua entered his sophomore year, his talent on the court became undeniable. His dedication to the game and his ability to deliver for the Rangers led to his selection as a 2nd Team All-Conference player in the Mid Penn Conference League. His growth continued, and he started developing into one of the league's premier shooters and a key player for his team. His defensive skills, combined with his scoring, helped elevate the Northwest Rangers to competitive levels within the league.

By his junior year, Jozshua had already transformed into a basketball powerhouse. February 2024 was a historic month for him, as he achieved two major milestones in a span of just a few days.

During a game on February 7, 2024, Jozshua became the latest player to reach the coveted 1000 career points mark at Northwest High School. The achievement was a testament to his consistency and scoring prowess over the years, and it set the stage for even bigger accomplishments ahead. Jozshua’s shooting ability was a major weapon in his arsenal. On January 29, 2024, he broke the school’s 3-point field goal record, surpassing his sister Charleigh Miner’s record of 190 career 3-pointers with his own 191. The achievement added a personal element to his success, as his sister had been a prominent player at Northwest and her record was a cherished milestone in the school's basketball history.

In addition to breaking records, Jozshua was named the Mid Penn Conference League MVP for the 2023-2024 season. His stellar play throughout the year helped him secure the title of the league’s top player and leading scorer, with an average of 21.6 points per game. This performance not only placed him among the league’s best but also earned him recognition on a regional level. Jozshua's shooting dominance continued in his junior season, as he set a single-season school record with 109 3-pointers. His ability to score from long-range became a key asset for the Rangers, and opposing teams were forced to adjust their defensive schemes to contain him. Throughout his junior year, Jozshua had multiple standout performances. Notably, he set a school record of hitting 9 three-pointers in a single game on two separate occasions—once against North Penn-Mansfield and again against Millville. These performances were a demonstration of his ability to take over games with his shooting, and they solidified his reputation as one of the best shooters in the area.

As Jozshua entered his senior year, the accolades continue to pour in. The milestones keep coming, as his career excels with some of the most impressive statistics and performances in school history. On February 2, 2025, during his senior year, Jozshua achieved another remarkable milestone by scoring his 1500th career point at Millville. This achievement was a major milestone in his career and highlighted his growth as both a scorer and a leader over his four years at Northwest High. And just three days later, on February 5, 2025, Jozshua hit his 300th career 3-pointer during a home game against Benton. This was another huge accomplishment, cementing his legacy as one of the best shooters the school has ever seen. His shooting range and consistency solidifies the fact that he is now a fixture in the school’s basketball history. His scoring is key to the Rangers’ success, and their opponents see him as a constant threat on the court.

Beyond his accomplishments at Northwest High School, Jozshua also gained valuable experience with the Wyoming Valley Clutch AAU travel team. Over the span of six years, he played against some of the best talent in the region and beyond and gained exposure that only enhanced his development as a player.

Jozshua's commitment to his community is also noteworthy. As a 4-year Honor student at Northwest High School, he has excelled academically while also being heavily involved in service activities. He served as a Camp Epichesica staff counselor, volunteered as a Northwest Biddy Basketball Coach for four years, helped out at the Northwest HS Food Bank for four years, and dedicated his time as a VBS volunteer at the Sweet Valley Church of Christ. His leadership on and off the court has been felt in both the classroom and the community.

Jozshua Miner’s story is one of remarkable achievement. He has shown what it means to be a student-athlete. His records, accolades, and community service have left a legacy that will be remembered by future generations of Rangers. As he heads into the final weeks of his senior season with his high school career coming to a close, his impact on Northwest High School will be felt for years to come.
