CLARKS SUMMIT — In a back-and-forth battle that had everything from big hits to late-inning heroics, Greater Pittston Township emerged victorious in thrilling fashion, walking off Carbino/Archbald 11-10 in Sunday’s Section 5 8-9-10 winners bracket game at Ackerly Field.
With the game tied at 10 in the bottom of the sixth, Anthony Cerasaro stepped to the plate and calmly drew a bases-loaded walk that brought home Kaysen Simmons, sending GPT into Tuesday’s championship game.
Simmons was electric at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Cerasaro and Eric Garubba each tripled and scored a run, while Rocco Skula had a huge day—collecting two hits, two RBIs, and crossing the plate once.
Skula, Joseph Basile, and Santino Rynkiewicz combined to lead GPT’s pitching effort, with Basile and Simmons also recording clutch RBIs in the early innings. GPT’s offense exploded for five runs in both the first and second innings, setting the tone early.
Carbino/Archbald wasn’t going down quietly. The squad rallied to tie the game in the fifth, with Tyler Eremo blasting a triple and driving in two. Colton Perry and Leo Heim each collected two hits, while Tyler Smolko added an RBI single in the comeback push. Owen Wiseman reached base twice via walk, and Perry stole three bases in a disruptive effort on the basepaths.
Eremo, Russell Fenton, Connor McAfee, and Matty Sotak contributed offensively for Carbino/Archbald, who collected six hits and eight walks in the game.
Garubba’s early triple and Connor Yonki’s two stolen bases helped power GPT’s offense to a 12-hit afternoon. Defensively, GPT’s depth on the mound held strong late to keep Carbino/Archbald from completing the comeback.
With the win, Greater Pittston Township advances to the Section 5 Championship Game, where they await the winner of Monday’s elimination game between Abington and Carbino/Archbald. First pitch for the final is set for Tuesday at 6:00 PM back at Ackerly Field.
Tuesday’s title game is set — and GPT will be rested, ready, and waiting.
