EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. — Behind a dominant outing from Rocco Skula and a disciplined performance at the plate, Greater Pittston Township National secured a 4-1 win over Mountain Top to claim the District 16 Minors (9-10) Championship on Saturday at West Side Baseball Park.
With the victory, GPT National advances to the Section 5 tournament, where they’ll take on Greater Wyoming Area (District 31), Abington Heights (District 17), and the winner of Sunday’s District 32 championship between Valley View and Green Ridge.
Skula set the tone early, ripping an RBI double in the first inning to give GPT a 1-0 lead. The bats stayed patient and productive, as Dominic Macario worked a bases-loaded walk in the third to push the lead to 2-0.
Skula’s biggest contribution, however, came on the mound. The right-hander was electric, tossing 4.1 hitless innings while striking out 11 and walking four to keep Mountain Top off balance.
Anthony Cortese and Skula each drove in runs for GPT National, while Colston Talerico, Connor Yonki, and Santino Rynkiewicz added hits in the win. Kaysen Simmons drew two walks, pacing a lineup that showed poise with six total walks on the day.
Mountain Top kept things close behind a strong outing from William Gagliardi, who allowed just two hits and three runs (two earned) over four innings while striking out four. Defensively, Mountain Top turned a key double play in the fourth to stay within reach.
Despite a solid effort from the Mountain Top All-Stars, it was GPT National’s pitching and patience that proved the difference in a well-played title game.
Now, Greater Pittston Township National turns its attention to the Section 5 tournament, where they’ll look to keep their title run alive with state tournament dreams on the horizon.
