FAIRCHANCE, PA – In a battle between two of the state’s most talented teams, Abington fell 7-2 to a sharp GEYA (Glenmoore Eagle Youth Association) squad on Wednesday night in the Majors State Tournament winners bracket at Fairchance Little League.
Abington entered the night with momentum after two strong wins to open tournament play, but GEYA, hailing from Uwchlan Township, showed early why they’ve been one of the hottest teams in the state. A two-run double by Nick Bongiorni in the bottom of the first and a pair of second-inning runs helped GEYA jump out to a 4-0 lead.
Max Vazquez got the start for Abington and battled through 1.2 innings, striking out four, but GEYA capitalized on early traffic and free passes. On the other side, GEYA’s Aiden Mercer was lights-out, tossing 5.2 innings with nine strikeouts and just two hits allowed.
Abington broke through in the fourth, scoring on a pair of RBI efforts from Julian McDonough and Oliver Giroux, but couldn’t overcome the early deficit. McDonough and Giroux each recorded hits for Abington, while the defense turned in solid plays to keep the game within reach.
With the loss, Abington drops into the elimination bracket but remains very much alive in the tournament. Their next game will be a must-win, but this is a group that’s proven time and again they know how to respond when the pressure’s on.
This setback may have knocked them out of the winner's bracket, but the road to a championship is far from over.
