In a high-energy showdown, Hazleton Area (HAHS) overwhelmed Berwick (BHS) with an explosive offensive display, securing a dominant 16–6 victory in just five innings.
Berwick jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Hazleton answered quickly and never looked back. After scoring 4 runs in the second inning, the Cougars put up 5 more in the third and exploded for 6 in the fourth, putting the game firmly out of reach. Hazleton totaled 16 runs on 16 hits, while holding Berwick to 6 runs on 10 hits — and crucially, committed zero errors compared to Berwick’s five.
H. Matyas was unstoppable at the plate, going 4-for-4 with 3 runs scored and 4 RBIs. K. Lagowy added 3 hits, 4 runs, and 3 RBIs, and swiped 2 bases, causing chaos on the basepaths. O. Williams and A. Blanyar each delivered multi-hit, multi-RBI performances, contributing to a balanced and dangerous Hazleton lineup.
On the mound, I. Almeida worked 4.2 innings, allowing 4 earned runs while striking out 7. Hazleton’s defense backed him up flawlessly, making all the routine plays and keeping pressure on Berwick throughout.
For Berwick, E. Welsh was a bright spot, going 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs, and M. Brown added 2 hits and 2 stolen bases. Despite their 10 hits, the Bulldogs couldn’t overcome the defensive lapses and Hazleton’s relentless offense.
Final Score: Hazleton 16, Berwick 6 (5 innings)
Hazleton improves with an emphatic statement win, while Berwick will look to regroup and clean up their defense heading into their next contest.
