PHILADELPHIA, PA -- In a moment that symbolized strength, hope, and the unwavering power of community, Eddie Kaufman stood tall on the mound at Citizens Bank Park Saturday afternoon, tossing out the ceremonial first pitch for the Philadelphia Phillies.
The 20-year-old Mid Valley standout and Roanoke College baseball player has been battling T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia for months — a journey filled with long hospital stays, exhausting treatments, and moments of uncertainty. But this weekend’s spotlight wasn’t about the disease. It was about Eddie — the fighter, the friend, the symbol of perseverance for so many.
Surrounded by family, supporters, and medical staff from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Eddie took the field to a standing ovation. With the support of his “Team Eddie K” community cheering from across the region and beyond, he delivered a pitch that meant far more than just a strike or a ball — it represented everything he’s fought for and everything still ahead.
Following the pitch, Eddie was met on the field by Phillies legend and former manager Larry Bowa, who shook his hand and offered words of encouragement. It was a moment etched in gratitude — a nod to Eddie’s strength and the massive wave of support behind him.
Still Battling. Still Believing.
Eddie’s journey is far from over. His latest round of chemotherapy didn’t lower his cancer markers enough, but hope continues through a new path: a CAR-T therapy clinical trial that he is slated to begin in the coming weeks. Doctors remain optimistic that this treatment will bring his leukemia levels low enough to move forward with a stem cell transplant — the next critical step in his fight.
The stem cell donor process is ongoing, and early swab participants are beginning to receive word of their inclusion in the national registry. The support has been staggering. Swab events across NEPA and beyond — coordinated by Team Eddie K — have drawn thousands, all hoping to be the match that could help Eddie, or someone just like him, get a second chance.
And through it all, Eddie continues to inspire.

This journey is one Eddie isn’t walking alone. Every message, every swab, every prayer — it all matters. The Kaufman family continues to express deep gratitude for the incredible support shown by the community, from fellow patients like 10-year-old Chase at CHOP (who nominated Eddie for the Phillies honor), to complete strangers uplifted by his story.
As Eddie steps into the next phase of his treatment, his day on the mound stands as a powerful reminder: the best stories are often the hardest fought — and Eddie's story is still being written.
