Berwick exploded offensively and shut down MMI Preparatory School in a dominant 21-0 road victory on Wednesday, improving to 9-9 on the season heading into Thursday’s matchup at Lake-Lehman.
Emma Welsh delivered a jaw-dropping performance at the plate, driving in six runs on three hits. The Bulldogs’ catcher crushed a home run to center in the fourth, tripled in both the second and fifth innings, and capped her afternoon with a walk that brought home another run. Welsh finished 3-for-3 with 10 total bases and was responsible for a third of Berwick’s RBIs.
Pitcher Morgan Siegel was equally masterful in the circle, tossing a complete-game one-hit shutout. Siegel struck out 11 without issuing a single walk across five innings and even recorded an immaculate inning in the third, striking out the side on just nine pitches. She also contributed offensively with a 1-for-3 line, two RBIs, and a double.
Berwick set the tone early, scoring two in the first before erupting for five runs in the second on a sequence that included RBIs from Siegel, Makayla Brown, Welsh, and Yaritza Rivas. The fourth saw another trio of runs, highlighted by Welsh’s two-run blast. The Bulldogs buried MMI with an 11-run outburst in the fifth, a rally that featured RBIs from Ashlyn Klahold, Kennedy Hunter, Welsh, Rivas, Siegel, and three consecutive batters being hit by pitches to force in runs.
Hunter and Lauren Ashworth joined Welsh with three hits apiece. Brown (3-for-4, 2 RBIs) and Rivas (2-for-4, 3 RBIs) added multi-hit performances. Klahold reached base in all three of her plate appearances, scoring four times and driving in two. Ashworth tallied four total bases and swiped one of the team’s four stolen bags.
Defensively, Berwick was flawless—committing no errors. Welsh anchored the unit with a game-high 11 fielding chances.
Cassidy took the loss for MMI Prep, allowing 18 runs (10 earned) on 16 hits over 4.1 innings. Gabby came in for relief, surrendering three runs on no hits while walking three and striking out one.
Berwick will now look to climb above .500 with a win over Lake-Lehman on Thursday.
