Elk Lake’s girls’ swim team delivered a statement victory on Wednesday night, defeating Scranton Prep 98-84 in one of the most anticipated meets of the Lackawanna League season. The win ended Scranton Prep’s dominant streak of 73 consecutive dual-meet victories, a run that dated back to 2016.
Hannah Howell was a key contributor for Elk Lake, winning the 200-yard freestyle (2:13.78) and 500 freestyle (6:06.62). Elk Lake sealed the overall victory in the final race of the night, the 400-yard freestyle relay, with a time of 4:05.60, narrowly outpacing Scranton Prep’s 4:08.12.
The Lady Warriors also gained a significant edge in the diving events, where Lily Rauch (187.95), Saddie Smith (186.75), and Taylor States (131.90) swept the top three spots. This dominance provided crucial points that Scranton Prep couldn’t overcome, despite their strong performances in other events.
Scranton Prep’s talented roster produced several individual wins. Eva Kaszuba captured first in the 200 individual medley (2:28.14) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.74), while Rebecca Oakes took the 50 free (25.74) and 100 free (56.64). The team also excelled in the 200 medley and 200 free relays. However, Elk Lake’s depth and consistency across events proved to be the deciding factor.
With the victory, Elk Lake improved to 4-0 this season, while Scranton Prep dropped to 3-1. The meet highlighted the competitive spirit and talent within the league and marked a turning point for Elk Lake, as they solidified their place as a top contender.
