The area's best teams and runners traveled to Hershey, PA, to compete in the PIAA state cross country meet and put on a show.
The day started off with the girls’ “Single A” race as Elk Lake took 4th place out of the 22-team field. Only 41 points off first place, the girls are going to be a force for the next few years as their top 5 are all freshmen and sophomores. Kendyl Weisgold led the way for the Warriors, taking home a 9th-place medal in a time of 20:18. Her teammates Madison Kerr and Kylee Pond ran close together, taking 32nd and 40th place. Montrose’s Avery Kerr was in contention for a medal the entire race, hovering between 21st and 28th place, but ultimately crossed the line in one of the hardest spots to finish, taking 26th place in a time of 20:56. Avery, along with Ava Revello’s 47th-place finish, helped lead Montrose to a 14th-place finish.
In the “Double A” girls’ race, District 2 champion Sadie Loftus from Valley View had a strong start, coming through both the mile and halfway points in the top 30 before dropping out due to an ongoing cold. The top local finishers were Tunkhannock’s Morgan Alexander in 52nd place with a time of 21:01; Morgan moved up from 80th place all the way to 45th throughout the race. Not far behind was Wallenpaupack’s June Brown in 58th (21:08), and one second behind in 59th was Evolette Reinard from North Pocono. June led Wallenpaupack to a 15th-place finish out of 21 teams, and Valley View finished 20th place.
The girls’ “Triple A” race was one of the best the area has seen in quite some time, with 3 ladies claiming individual state medals. Leading the way was Abington’s Anna Pucilowski, who got out strong and established herself in medal contention early and didn’t look back. Anna hovered in the top 10 through the first half of the race but lost a few spots over the last 2k as she held on for 18th place and a time of 19:20. Abington Heights finished 12th place as a team with 283 points; the team showed a ton of heart and was just 10 points away from a top-10 finish. Crestwood’s Katie Kozich showed great composure, starting off the race in 55th and moving up throughout the race, inching closer and closer to a state medal; Katie crossed the line in 23rd place with a time of 19:27. Sophomore Grace Holderith from Delaware Valley also had an amazing day as she used a late move and strong finish to move up from a top-40 finish to a 24th-place finish in 19:34.
