WILKES-BARRE, PA — In a hard-fought battle, Crestwood held off a late surge from Freire Charter to secure a 52-45 victory in the second round of the PIAA 5A state tournament on Wednesday night. With the win, the Comets punched their ticket to the quarterfinals, where they will face Strath Haven on Saturday.

Crestwood set the tone early, jumping out to a 19-9 lead in the first quarter behind strong play from Jackie Gallagher, who led all scorers with 19 points. The Comets continued to control the pace, heading into halftime up 32-16.

However, Freire Charter refused to go down without a fight. The Dragons clawed back in the second half, led by Anesah Cruz (17 points) and Destiny Davis (12 points, two three-pointers). A strong fourth-quarter push saw Freire outscore Crestwood 18-14, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.

Crestwood’s balanced attack and free-throw shooting made the difference. The Comets knocked down 12 of 18 free throws, compared to just 7 of 15 for Freire. Gallagher was key down the stretch, while Kendall Petrosky added 11 points, and Charlie Hiller contributed 10 points in the win.

Freire Charter had the edge from beyond the arc, hitting six three-pointers, but Crestwood’s defensive pressure and steady offensive execution sealed the victory.

The Comets will now turn their attention to a quarterfinal matchup against Strath Haven on Saturday, as they continue their quest for a state title.
