In a dominant playoff opener on Tuesday, May 20, the Valley View Cougars erupted for 13 runs in just two innings to rout Scranton Prep 13-0 in a five-inning mercy-rule victory at home. The Cougars wasted no time setting the tone, plating seven runs in the bottom of the first and following it up with six more in the second to put the game out of reach.

Valley View’s offense was relentless, collecting 11 hits while drawing six walks and capitalizing on a Scranton Prep error. Leading the offensive onslaught was Emily Moyles, who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, including a double. Ashlyn Palickar matched that production with a 2-for-3 effort, driving in two runs and also doubling. Abbi Call added two hits and an RBI, while Zoie Krupovich and Cora Castellani also contributed key run-scoring hits.

Taylor Cawley was masterful on the mound, throwing a complete-game shutout over five innings. The right-hander allowed just two hits, struck out six, and didn’t issue a walk. She also helped her own cause with a solo home run in the second inning and added two RBIs on the day. Cawley faced just 17 batters and needed only 49 pitches to complete the game, with 38 going for strikes.

The Cougars showed depth throughout the lineup. Nine players reached base safely, and the team showed discipline at the plate—Karwowski and Castellani each drew two walks. Defensively, Valley View was flawless, committing zero errors. Catcher Maggie Hallett recorded six chances behind the plate.

For Scranton Prep, Bella Dennebaum and Grace McCormack managed the team’s only hits, while their pitching staff struggled to contain the red-hot Valley View bats. Starting pitcher B. DeRiancho allowed 11 runs on six hits and five walks in just 2/3 of an inning before being relieved by A. Wilce, who allowed two additional runs over 3.1 innings.

With the win, Valley View moves on in the AAAA district playoffs and sends a strong message that they are a team no one wants to face in the postseason.
