Northampton, PA – The Hazleton Area Cougars took control in the second half to pull away from Northampton, securing a convincing 60-41 victory in the first round of the PIAA 6A Boys State Tournament at Northampton High School.
The game remained close through the first two quarters, with Hazleton holding a slim 27-23 halftime lead. However, a dominant third quarter saw the Cougars outscore the Konkrete Kids 18-8, setting the stage for their eventual double-digit win.
Senior standout Luis Guzman led all scorers with 23 points, showcasing efficiency at the free-throw line with a perfect 6-for-6 performance. Dylan Stish knocked down three triples, finishing with 11 points, while Yohansal Moran also added 11 in the balanced offensive effort. The Cougars showed their range from beyond the arc, sinking seven three-pointers to Northampton’s four.
Northampton was paced by Leo Regec, who tallied 12 points, and Noah Walakovits, who contributed 9. Despite keeping pace early, the Konkrete Kids couldn’t match Hazleton’s firepower down the stretch.
With this victory, Hazleton advances to the next round, continuing their quest for a state title vs. Conestoga from District 1.
