On January 10, two of the three remaining unbeaten girls basketball teams in District 2 faced off. The Valley View Lady Cougars hit the road to take on their biggest rivals, the Scranton Prep Classics. The Lackawanna League Division One matchup marked the first meeting between these two teams since the PIAA District 2 4A championship game last season, where the Classics took home the gold by a final score of 55-31. This time around, the Classics picked up the win again by a final score of 59-34. The Classics improve to 11-0 and the Lady Cougars fall to 11-1.
The game started off slow for both teams, as the first three minutes of the game were scoreless. Ashlyn Moore got the Classics rolling with five points in the first frame, but Giada Costa was able to respond for the Lady Cougars with four points of her own. In the second quarter, the Classics exploded, outsourcing Valley View 20-8 in the period. Jenna Hillebrand and Maya Jenkins both knocked down three triples for Scranton Prep, and Costa did her best to keep pace with 10 first half points. The Classics kept their foot on the gas, and held a 47-22 lead after three quarters.
The Classics once again proved why they are the team to beat in District 2 4A. They held the previously unbeaten Lady Cougars to a season low in points. Jenkins finished with 23 points and Hillebrand added 16. For the Lady Cougars, Costa was the leading scorer with 17. These two teams will see each other again in Archibald on February 3.
