Carbondale Area came through in the clutch on Friday afternoon, securing a dramatic 5-4 walk-off win over Honesdale in eight innings in a back-and-forth battle.
The Chargers jumped out early with a two-run first inning, but Honesdale chipped away, scoring runs in the second, third, fourth, and seventh to keep pace. The Hornets tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh, forcing extra innings.
Carbondale got the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth, capitalizing on timely hitting and a deep lineup. Rori Esgro led the Chargers’ offense, going 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs. Olivia Ellinger added two hits and a run, while Abby Carachilo drove in a key run on a 3-hit day.
Pitcher Alyssa Lewis was dominant in the circle, throwing a complete 8-inning game. She allowed just 1 earned run, scattered 8 hits, and struck out 10 to earn the win.
For Honesdale, Ava Patrisso reached base three times and scored twice, while Rachel Chee and Lily Head each had two hits. Georgianna Maglione drove in a run, and Hannah Diehl scored twice.
Despite a solid 7.2-inning effort from Leah Salzameda in the circle, the Hornets couldn’t contain the Chargers’ late push.
The win improves Carbondale’s record and provides a momentum boost as they look to stay competitive in a tightly contested season.
